The House of the Seven Gables, also called the Turner-Ingersoll Mansion, is a 1668 merchant's house on Salem Harbor that inspired Nathaniel Hawthorne's 1851 novel and now operates as a museum and settlement association at 115 Derby Street 1, 2. The museum runs after-hours candlelit tours each October that present the house as Hawthorne described it, with a family curse, mysterious deaths and ghosts of its past 3. Visitors commonly describe footsteps on the floors above them, the feeling of being watched in the upper rooms, and a figure said to appear at the attic windows.
