Community Guidelines
How to contribute to Vigil: honest field records, respect for places and people, and what gets removed.
Field record, not costume shop
Vigil is a record of what people actually experience at reportedly haunted and unexplained places. It's only useful if it's honest. These guidelines explain what belongs here. They're part of our Terms of Service.
Be honest
- Report what you experienced, including when nothing unusual happened. "Nothing unusual" is a valuable report.
- Never stage, fake or fabricate evidence. Say so clearly if media is edited, enhanced or reconstructed.
- Give the real date, time and place. Provenance is what makes a report worth reading.
- If you know of an ordinary explanation, share it in the comments. It keeps the record honest.
Respect places and the law
- Follow each location's access status and legal warning. Don't enter private property without the owner's permission, and respect closing hours.
- Don't post content that shows or encourages trespassing, breaking in or vandalism.
- Never disturb graves, remains, artifacts or historic structures, and don't post instructions for doing so.
- Many listed places are private homes, and reports can come from homes too. Don't share details that would lead people to bother the people who live there, and never put a street address in a report.
Respect people
- No harassment, threats, bullying or hate based on who someone is.
- Don't share anyone's private information, such as a home address, phone number or workplace, without their consent.
- Get consent before posting media where private individuals can be identified, and never post identifiable minors without a parent's permission.
- Disagree with claims, not with people. Skepticism is welcome; mockery isn't.
- Be respectful of real tragedies. Many places are connected to real deaths and suffering.
Not allowed
- Sexual content, graphic violence or gore.
- Content that exploits or endangers children. We report it to the authorities.
- Spam, repetitive posts, undisclosed advertising, or links posted mainly for promotion.
- Impersonating people or organizations.
- Content you don't have the rights to post.
- Anything illegal.
What happens when something breaks the rules
Posts go live immediately, and the community keeps the record clean. Flag anything that breaks these guidelines. Moderators review flags and may hide content, limit an account, or close it, depending on how serious and how repeated the problem is. Content that endangers people or breaks the law is removed right away and may be reported.
